Brighter Sounds residency with Eska

Alice was one of14 incredible artists selected by ESKA to collaborate during an exciting four-day residency “Are You Here?”. Brand new music and visuals was showcased at Band on the Wall on Sunday 28 May in a special one-off event.

Adrian Jackson, founder and artistic director of award-winning theatre company Cardboard Citizens, will join ESKA as associate director. Together ESKA and Adrian will be challenging the emerging artists, working across art forms, to create socially conscious music in response to the turbulent political landscape.

The residency was the eighth in Brighter Sound’s Artistic Directors Series which aims to support artists in all stages of their careers, giving them the time and space to experiment.

RICH MIX with Shama Rhaman

Two multi-instrumentalists come together with their respective bands to bring you an evening of original music.

Expect to be taken on a journey of different musical worlds being celebrated and brought together.

SHAMA performs with her electro-acoustic band with live Sitar, uniquely taking it from a traditional context to new genres like jazz, live electronics, afro latin worldbeats and more. Her music has been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Songlines, Arts Desk and the BBC.

Her album Truth BeTold is the first live album to be recorded throughout using the pioneering wearable technology ‘mi.mu gloves’ – famously publicised by Imogen Heap.

Her multimedia performance of the album at the Southbank was featured on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and, most recently, she performed the album on an expedition as the first Sitarist in Antarctica as part of the first Antarctic Biennale – which made The Times and Radio 4’s Front Row.

Multi-instrumentalist and leader of an ethereal harp collective, Alice blends folk from around the world with non-traditional and blues infused melodies.

The result is ambient, lilting, rhythmic harmonies contrasting with husky vocals in a very unusual and beautiful way!

Alice composes for the harp and the violin, creating orchestral and choral peices reflecting on past and present experiences she has herself come across or witnessed from afar.

After a sell out show for the release of her first record at the legendary Passing Clouds venue, she has taken London by storm playing at the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts and Ronnie Scott’s to name a few.
